H.P. Blavatsky on the higher and lower egos

Blavatsky uses the Sanskrit term “Manas” to refer to the human mind, but more specifically, typically uses it to refer to the “higher ego”, of which the lower ego or personality (psychic architecture, imaginary) is a mere reflection. Apart from this, Blavatsky did not believe that the higher ego has direct contact with the human person. For her, the higher ego precedes the human person with its body, in existence, and is an emanation of the divine that eventually incarnates:

“Manas is, as it were, a globe of pure, Divine Light, a Ray from the World Soul, a unit from a higher sphere, in which is no differentiation. Descending to a plane of differentiation it emanates a Ray which is itself, which it can only manifest through the personality already differentiated. This Ray is the Lower Manas, while the globe of Divine Light, a Kumāra on its own plane, is the Higher Ego, or Higher Manas, Manas proper.”
